Arkansas’ fall season brings some very welcome cool weather after a hot summer, plus we get to watch nature paint a new vibrant picture around us. It also brings various American-style German October festivals celebrated nationally and locally, and a small community nestled in the Ozark Mountains called Fairfield Bay held its first Oktoberfest in 2014. Also, there was another event that tagged along called StoryFest. StoryFest was a little older by six years.
Before there was television, movies and social media, there were storytellers. Story telling started as an ancient means of communication between tribes, sojourners and cultures. Over time it has developed into its own art form. The Fairfield Bay StoryFest brought in professional story tellers who tell tales from their childhood or stories shared down from their ancestors. The Fairfield Bay Conference Center completed a major renovation in October 2013, and the city celebrated in 2014 with a combination of Oktoberfest and StoryFest. Once again StoryFest and Oktoberfest started as a newspaper freelance photo assignment in 2013, and continues to be part of our annual FARE Pix schedule and as a freelance photographer with 501 Life Magazine.
The Fairfield Bay Oktoberfest has been held at and around the conference center each year. During the day, it’s fun for the whole family but at night the adults have their own playground inside the conference center. Authentic German food is served, the beer flows, people dance, and the adults play their own games.
The evening transitioned at 4:30 p.m. for the adults inside the conference center. It starts with a Volksmarch starting from the conference center dining and stage area and around the rest of the center. Then comes rolling out the barrel. People who attend the event are encouraged to dress in German Octobers Fest costumes. The games begin at 5 p.m. and include yodeling, the beer stein lift, best beer belly, best male and female German costume, and sexiest, hairiest and most athletic legs.
The Fairfield Bay 2019 Oktoberfest photo story continues on in the FARE Pix Gallery. Oktoberfest was our last 2019 story. We get to start all over again in 2020.
